The Pixies are an American alternative rock band formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1985.[1] The band disbanded in 1993 in acrimonious circumstances but reunited in 2004. Black Francis, Joey Santiago, Kim Deal, and Dave Lovering have been the band's continual members. The Pixies found only modest success in their home country, but were significantly more successful in the United Kingdom and elsewhere in Europe, although never achieving mainstream success with their studio albums.[2]

Their music, heavily influenced by punk and surf rock, was, while highly melodic, capable of being tremendously abrasive at the same time. Francis was the band's primary songwriter and singer and had a distinctly desperate, yowling delivery. He typically wrote cryptic songs about offbeat subjects, such as unidentified flying objects and surrealism.[3] References to mental instability, violent Biblical imagery, physical injury, and incest feature in many of the band's songs.[4][5]

The group is frequently posited as the immediate forebearer of the alternative rock boom of the early 1990s, though they disbanded before reaping any of the benefits this might have brought them.[6][7] Avowed fan Kurt Cobain's acknowledgement of the debt Nirvana owed to the Pixies,[8] along with similar tributes by other alternative bands, ensured that the Pixies' legacy and influence grew substantially in the years following their demise

The Pixies are a legendary art-rock band from the 80s/90s, who were largely influenced by Talking Heads, surf rock and indie rock. The band has influenced many artists, ranging from Kurt Cobain to David Bowie (who covered a Pixies song on his "Heathen" album).

You may have heard "Here Comes Your Man" or "Gigantic" on radio, but they never had any huge top 10 hits. They may be one of those bands who, if you hear a best-of album, you'll say "wow, I didn't know The Pixies sang that!"

The band reunited over the past few years to do a tour. They were talking about recording a new album, though the last I heard the band members were on bad terms again and are back to their own projects. Hopefully this isn't completely true!

They cannot be defined but they are a awsome band who have been around for many years. They fly under the radar. The only song I could think of that people may of heard of is "Where is my mind?" They played it at the end of Fight Club. They are very cool, quirky band

the pixies are considered by some to be "classic rock". I'd say that they're undefinable. but they're an awesome band.
