April 19, 1775. The Battles of Lexington and Concord.

The "official" start to the American Revolution is set at July 4, 1776 with the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

However, the battles started earlier than that date. Those who answered about the Battle of Lexington and Concord are correct. One can also trace the 'roots' back earlier- to the end of the French and Indian War and the resulting taxes levied on the colonists by the British Govt in the 1760s.

The first shot of the Revolution was fired in 1775, but I believe that the Revolution began in 1764. Patrick Henry defended the law in court and argued "that a King, by disallowing Acts of this salutary nature, from being the father of his people, degenerated into a Tyrant and forfeits all right to his subjects' obedience."

A revolution does not suddenly begin, and fighting start. It begins with people being unhappy about their governemtn, and actively seeking ways to lessen the governemtns influence over its people. This first act of a resident of the colonies began a long series of events that culminated in the active revolution, the writing of the Constitution and the founding of a country independant of England.

Interestingly enough wars do not set a date and then start.

They ease into being through one bad act and then another by one country or another.

WWII started in Europe in the late 1930s 1936+. For Americans WWII began December 7th, 1941. When Japan bombed Pearl Harbor.

It was more specific for us since we had not gotten involved in the battles going on in Europe.

This is the reason why American MUST stay prepared for war, we can never know when someone else will want to do us harm.

The first battle (skirmish) occurred on 19 April, 1775 at Lexington MA. (We all remember 'the ride of Paul Revere' which heralded the beginning of the battle.)

The whole point of a revolution is that it's not 'official'! Nobody went and asked the authorities for permission!
