Citizens of the U.S. are from the only country that has America in it's name, United States of America. To refer to them as Uniteders or Staters would be awkward, so Americans stuck.

U.S. stands for The United States of America. Therefore, the inhabitants are referred to as Americans.

Those living in Canada are Canadians, those living in Mexico are Mexicans and so on.

However, those living in The United States, Mexico, and Canada are also considered NORTH AMERICANS.

I could on. But, you get the idea, right?

In Canada they're Canadians. In South America they're South Americans. United States of Americans just sound stupid and long so they shortened it to Americans! =]

We, South Americans, are Americans too. And that's why there is the "Pan-American games", the "Organization of the American States", etc. I'm Brazilian and American.

I prefer to call people from the US as "Yanks" or "US people" in English and as "estadunidenses" in Portuguese.
