This is not a silly question at all. If you check out this link at an official Catholic website, you can read one priest's defense and explanation of blessings of animals, it is moving and sweet: http://www.americancatholic.org/Features/francis/blessing.asp

St. Francis of Asissi was a monk of the middle ages who taught that all living creatures are blessed (and blessings to us, too). His feast day is October 4. Many Catholic communities have a day around that time when animals are blessed. In San Francisco, which is named for St. Francis, this is a big annual event, and people bring all sorts of pets -- from cats and dogs to parrots and iguanas -- to the church parking lot for a blessing. That Sunday, a special mass is held in praise of St. Francis and his benevolence to all of God's creation.

Here is a list of locations of these events. Unfortunately, it is not updated for this year yet, but if it was held last year, the practice probably continues:

Check to see if there is a church in your area that has something similar. Priests trained at a Franciscan (the holy order founded in honor of St. Francis) seminary are particularly likely to be sympathetic to your request. If there is no special event in your community, a Franciscan-trained or affilliated priest would probably grant your request and set up an appointment.

If none of this works, the Franciscan order does have instructions for a do-it-yourself pet blessing:

I am an animal lover and pray for the health and happiness of my pets. Surely God listens to these prayers, for "his eye is on the sparrow."

Good luck!

Every September Catholic churches in the area I live in have a special blessing for pets by a priest. I believe it is the bday of St. Frances of Assi (sorry about the spelling) St. Frances is the Patron Saint of all animals. This is NOT a stupid question. They have been having pet blessings here for almost 20 years. I wonder why the dye hard Catholics aren't answering this one.

PETS DO HAVE ETERNAL SOULS MORE THAN SOME PEOPLE. HOW DARE YOU SAY THAT YOU JERK.

You could always just ask. If you are a regular attendant at a church and the priest knows you, you could always ask. The worst that he can say is no.

You can also bring your pets to a church during the Feast of St. Francis on September 29. Many churches hold a blessing for the animals in the saint's honor.

There are not enough priests today to go visit sick persons, who are surely more important than pets. If you believe in blessings, then you must accept that pets do not have an eternal soul. If priests have time, they should spend it with humans.

But why donn't you just telephone a priest and ask him. Maybe if you bring him the pet, he will do it.

In this case.. the ONLY way is to actually take your pet to the priest(physically) for him to bless it.

Usually in the warmer months, the church will have an event where all parishoners can bring their pets to the parking lot. Or you can just bring your pet over to the church if you set up an appointment with a priest.

First, go to the rectory and ask if your preist blesses pets.

Second, set up a date with father or the secratary who is there.

Then, get your pet blessed.

Hope it helps!!!!!
