This sounds pretty serious, if you're a windows user that is. Do you normally haev extentions hidden? Maybe it has two (.exe.vb?). Could be a virus.

Or perhaps, something really strange happened to your file associations. Which mean you would have to possibly repair install windows...

If this is Linux or Mac you're fine.

.... Windows should open exe files on its own. If the .exe file is not opening when you double click it or whatever then 1) its a corrupt file 2) has wrong extension 3) what i think, probably a virus. Most backdoors or trojans have a .exe extension and when you try to open them, either nothing will appear to happen or a black screen will open and close really fast..

A .exe is an executable file, meaning that it doesn't need a program to open it. It is a program itself. Beware of opening it unless you downloaded it from a reputable source, as it could be a virus, ad-ware, mal-ware, etc....

If you're working on a Mac, I'm not sure whether or not it works the same way.

Most .exe files should open themselves. It's a program that you should just be able to double click on the file. If it's not windows compatible, you may have to type it in manually in DOS mode.

On windows systems you'll not need to use any special program to open it. Just double click it and it will open.

On other OSes its no use opening this file anyways as it contains illegible binary data. Linux users however, try to use wine to execute this file in a "box"

Why do you want to open it? An exe file is an executable and is not is source code. so once you have it open, what do you plan on doing with it? Or do you mean execute the application?
