I posted this before, but did not get any answers to it. I'm still looking for one. Thanks!
As a side note, In case you are like me and aren't quite sure what a compound word is, it's two words that are used together as one, like the words 'pine cones', which is what I thought the answer was, until it had to rhyme with 'wheel'...

New spring shoots on a pine tree are called candle(s). That would be the tip of the fir. It rhymes with wheel, but I suppose it isn't a compound word...just two syllables. The only compound word I have found is branchlet, which doesn't rhyme with wheel.
Have you considered calling you local nursey? They might know the answer,

Maybe 'pine needle'? It *sort of* rhymes with wheel.
