I always use mothballs. One Example would be when I go to the library, the bag I use for my books, I always put one in. I love the smell.

When I lived in FLorida near a pond, I used them around the property that bordered the pond to help deter snakes. They hate the smell and the number of snakes I found in the yard after starting to use them lowered dramatically.

Mothballs are CARCINOGENIC.

YES - they are TOXIC and KNOWN TO CAUSE CANCER.

Please don't use them... cedar chips, or cedar blocks, cedar hangers - all keep moths out of your clothes. They don't like the smell of cedar either - and it's ORGANIC and SAFE.

Believe it or not, but I have used them recently. I used them to keep my dog out of some young trees that I planted last spring.

The weird thing is that it worked. She tried to eat one of the moth balls, and it damn near killed her, but she didn't dig the trees up.
