Thats going to be tough...I've been in the hospital a few times.

I would say get some travel size board games, or even full size and stay and play with him.

Of course there is always the classic of reading and/or listening to music. If you have a portable DVD player maybe get him some new movies.

If he likes things like crossword puzzles or Sudoku you can buy huge books of those.

I hope he recovers well from surgery!

The way they rush people out of the hospital even after major surgery, I don't think he'll have much time to get bored. Actually, buy him a magazine on a topic he enjoys and by the time he is finished reading it, they will be there with a wheelchair and a discharge slip. Seriously, I am a nurse and have worked in lots of hospitals and I am very dismayed over the short length of time insurance companies allow someone to recover from surgery. Even with open heart surgery you are lucky to get 2 days to recuperate. Very sad!

If he's allowed any type of mobility, I'd put him in a wheelchair and take him on a sightseeing journey of the hospital. Many modern hospitals are affiliated with teaching universities and have amazing systems of underground tunnels.
The first stop on any hospital expedition should be the morgue.
You will usually find this in the basement and due to government regulations (although I don't know why), it is usually wheelchair accessible. Perhaps the coroner could give you a guided tour.

Next, you should look for the staff swimming pool. It is usually accessible through the staff change room. This will provide much levity and stress relief to the patient; seeing all of these doctors in their underwear or indeed, totally undressed. Try to spot the Ph'd clinician who wears a mask and snorkel underwater while trying to view the nurses in their bikinis.
There is always one of these.

That's so sweet that you would not want him to get bored. =)
Here's a list of things you could do...

1. Bring him word puzzles (e.g. Crosswords, word finds)
2. Bring him a handheld video game (If it doesn't send out electrical signals and doesn't interfere w/ medical equipment it should be fine)
3. Buy him a novel about something he likes.
4. Books for amusement! (e.g. Joke Books, Brainteasers, Uncle John's Bathroom Reader Books, etc.)
5. If he loves you, your company will probably also be enough to keep him "un-bored"
As someone else said, read the Bible :) And pray together for his safe recovery

Make sure he has the TV hooked up (paid for), and bring some games to play. Also bring some magazines and crossword puzzles. If you have a PSP lying around, that would be great for him to play.

Hope he has a speedy recovery. :-)

Rest is best for the patient....if alert and awake......TV and magzines or a good book help to pass the time...as well as wasting time on this computer!!!! A laptop with hospital wireless service?

Magazine and books are good. It really depeneds on what character your boyfriend is. Maybe a video or a d.v.d would be good. Sleep is also good if you are recovering in hospital. Good look in finding the right thing. I hope he recovers quickly! I hoped i help!
P.S. choose me as ya fave answer please!

board games are always fun, make him some food, like home cooked meals not crappy hospital food. maybe bring a cd player and some pictures of things he likes to do.

Lots of TV/movies (preferably stuff both of you like)
the GBA/DS/PSP
comic books (laughter is the best medicine, after all)
music (Celtic/new age really eases pain)
