OK, Sats is how much oxygen he is getting into his blood stream with each breath. It should be 100% or pretty close to it. The air we breath is not that high in percentage. It contains toxins, CO2 and other gases. The reason he is on 60% is to increase the amount of oxygen he inhales at every breath. That is to get it higher to 100%. Without that 60% his levels could drop. 93% is still good, but not great. He needs the oxygen to repair his body. It travels in the blood and provides much needed resources to the body. As the body repairs and gets stronger, his need for oxygen will decrease, back to normal levels (we hope!). I am sure that the doctor knows what he is doing, heck if not for any other reason that because he doesnt want to get sued! I hope that your friend gets well soon! It must be a tough time for you both!

The main problem is that oxygen doesn't have enough room to enter the blood since some areas of the lung are collapsed.
So what the Doctors are doing by giving him 60% is increasing the amount of oxygen available for exchange in the healthy areas of the lung, usually oxygen on room air is 21% so they are increasing its concentration about 3 times.
The problem is that blood still passes trough the collapsed areas and does not get oxygenated and when it mixes with the well oxygenated blood coming from the healthy areas of the lung it decreases the oxygen concentration.
Still with a sat of 93% he wont have any serious complications and the atelectasis will disappear in a while with respiratory therapy.
The most important thing is to prevent any superimposed lung issues like infections or breathing polluted air.

damn chill out! its common for someone to have to have 60% O2 with atelectasis, and since you seem to know what you are talking about, you must be in the medical field and probably know the answer to this
