The story was based around 1930s or 1940s and involved a country setting when a farmer found a big hole dug on his property, at night, weird noises would arise from the hole. One day, the farmer's beloved dog went into the hole only to hear the dog scream--later, with the help of some neighbors, the farmer tied on a rope and went into the hole....when they pulled up the rope the farmer was gone..it may have been an episode from Tales from the Darkside but i am not sure. I hope someone else can remember the name of it. It is kind of like an old song, you remember the lyrics but not the name. Can anyone help?

sounds like an episode of Amazing Stories. did the farmer's daughter send down a dictionary and some food to see what came back? if this is the same episode, the "hole people" each back a different message according to what the dictionary says it is (i.e. "thank you for the chicken what else you got?") and trade with her some gold. when the farmer goes down they tell her "thanks for the turkey what else you got?" hope this is what your looking for.

That definitely sounds like an epoisode of Amazing Stories. I think they also sent a guy down in some kind of space suit and the suit came back up, but the guy was not in it anymore. That was a very cool show, but it wasn't on very long.
