Yes you can strip the lugs.... discount tire are aholes. The rule of thumb is you use power tools to remove parts and you tighten by hand. I would threaten to get my lawyer involved if they don't fix it.

This happens all the time. They can strip the lugs, or just compress the threads so that they don't work. The guy probably had the thing set on "tighten" and didn't realize it. I had a guy tighten a lug so tight that it ripped the lug right off the car, and it had to be replaced. Do not let your wife drive a vehicle without the proper number of lugs on it. You can replace the whole assembly if needed. Also, if the tire company won't fix their mistake, then you need contact your local Better Business Bureau or Chamber of Commerce and file a complaint.

You can strip the studs with an impact gun putting them on if the lug nut is not threaded properly to begin with. Lug nuts should always be threaded on by hand first, then tightened with the impact gun and torque stick.
Some technicians, to save a few seconds, will just stick the lug nut in the end of the gun, put it up to the stud and let er' rip. That's when you have have problems with them cross-threading.
You can't strip them coming off because they are already threaded.

Lugs can be damaged in several ways.
Are you describing damage to the lug nuts themselves OR the studs screwed into the axle? Lug nuts are not that expensive to replace.
I suggest that damage is more likely to happen if the lug nuts are not tight enough, placing the wheel at risk of coming off the axle. The other possibility is cross-threading when the threads are not aligned and the nut is tightened.

It truly is not that difficult to over tighten lug nuts.
I have broken countless studs by using a 4 way lug wrench to "loosen" lug nuts that were way to tight from impact wrenches putting them on.
One time I twisted a 4-way lug wrench beyond use just trying to get a lug nut loose.
There was an Army guy who could not get the lug nuts off his car. His wife came and asked me to do it.. I broke them all loose with the guys eyes watching as big as saucers.
----------------------------------
If those studs or lug nuts became stripped it was from someone installing them crooked or cross threaded.
Does this help any?

yes..you can also twist them off. I had this happen and the tire shop had to pay to fix my car.
I also learned that that in some states you can start the nut with a "tool" but have to finish by hand tightening them with a wrench

yes, you can strip the threads, if pressure is too high, or cross thread the nuts and strip the threads that way.
If you mean you told the shop you re-torqued or changed the tires , or had them off and back on after they worked on them, I think you weakened your case.

impact guns are bad for striping lugs... if you really used a torque wrench you deserve a prize..you are one in a million....sue them in small claims court if you have to..
