Some do, some don't. The ones who do perform better are scared witless of more beatings so they work like the devil to avoid the abuse. Those who don't, couldn't give a hoot about the job to begin with and get extremely annoyed when beating.

Interesting question! Quite possibly--In "the prince" by machiavelli, he objects to ruling with love, as the subjects hold the power, as they can regulate the amount of love they give.
However, in your scenario, with an iron fist, the ruler holds onto the power and thusly, controls them.

In fact, I had a job whereas I felt as if I had been beaten regularly--I worked harder (selling more--making the boss more money)Emotionally sick as it was, I kept it for about five years too many as I was making so much money.

Ya know, sometimes a physical whooping is a much better alternative to the mental anguish brought about in the work place. I say put me over your knee and get it over with quickly rather than pestering the ever loving crap out of me for the whole day!!

there is a fine line there. regular beatings are important, but there must be a carrot out front as well.

Absolutely. In fact, I think you should put it in the job posting. I'm sure people will line up around the block for their daily whippings. :)
