The "drug war" serves several purposes:
* protects the plastics industry from hemp competition (original reason for making marijuana illegal)
* protects pharmaceutical industry from cheap/public-domain competition (e.g. opium and derivatives)
* provides funding for clandestine intelligence operations (Afghanistan became a heroin powerhouse in the 1980's during U.S. CIA intervention there)
* feeds the prison-industrial complex, a set of industries and labor interests directly supported by massive incarceration
* creates a huge criminal class which can be exploited by the government to selectively prosecute for social or personal reasons

So you're only partially right.

Clearly, the public interest would be best served by decriminalization of virtually all drugs and treatment of the issue as a public health one (drugs would be safer, organized crime would be devastated, and people could readily seek out a more complete set of treatment alternatives without fear of prosecution). But the pharmaceutical, intelligence, and prison-industrial-complex lobbies would kill any such move. Besides, that would be a lot of power for the government to give up, and that goes against human nature.

What???? The reason that so many african-americans are in jail is because unfortunately, they are the ones commiting most of the crimes and the crimes are mostly against each other. The drug war is against all people who use, buy or sell drugs. I lived in South Florida during the 80's ( big drugs back then) and most of the people being arrested were white middle aged men because they were the ones running the drug business back then howver, if you watch the news or read the papers you will see that it has shifted now to a different group of people involved. Noone has done this to anyone....the people involved have gotten involved on their own and should be held accountable. This shouldn't be turned into a race thing.

Your statistics are greatly exagerated my friend. Still the majority of African Americans are law binding citizens not in jail as you say.

Its tru that higher percentage of african americans are in jail and the reason is pretty obvious, it comes down to the distribution and wealth and standard of living. People living in bad conditions are more likely per capita to commit some kinds of crimes.

Some people also point out to police bias; i.e., that more african americans are convicted for petty crimes. Several studies indicate this but I'm not sure how easy it is to objectively prove or disprove.

the 'war on drugs' is one that will always be lost because so many do not have the slightest clue about the reality of drugs and drug dealing etc. misinformation fed to the masses. The people who generally suffer are the small time personal user and their families. Until the entire attitude towards this 'war' changes, nothing will be 'won'

Poverty breeds crime. I don't know what the exact statistics are, but minority's are poorer than whites, so they commit more crime. But, I do think there is some racism involved too. Lots of white ppl deal and do drugs, but they don't get busted as often.

Also: Marijuana was made illegal in the first place to give cops a reason to arrest young black men.

Half of us aren't quite in jail.
But the rest of that stuff you said may very well be true.
