There is a great program that I only recently started using called Writer's Cafe. You can download a free demo copy at www.writerscafe.co.uk. The demo is functional and has no time or uses limit, but does limit the number items that you can put into a file (called a scrapbook), the number of "storylines" you can use (and probably the number of pages you can keep in a "notebook" though I've not bumped up against that yet.

Writer's cafe is a compendium of little mini-programs, but the one that you'd probably most be interested in is called "Storylines" and provides a database structure for entering and organizing information about whatever your writing. Numerous templates (for plays, stories, memoirs, scripts, etc.) are available. Storylines also provides the ability to lay out multiple story or thematic time lines for organizing chapters.

It also includes many other subprograms including the scrapbook, a notebook (that compiles it's own table of contents based on the first 3 lines of any page,) a dated journal, timed writing exercises with prompts.

I've tried a lot of these types of programs and had become very skeptical about writing software in general, but this one turned out to be everything it promised.

Very professional and no bugs that I've found.

There are a couple of things you could try. Blogging is one way to keep an online journal and put all your thoughts and entries there. You can determine whether you wish your blog (online diary) to be seen by others or not.
You may simply want to write your ideas, outlines, and work in a word processor document and save it on your hard drive, open it and add/ edit at will, then save your new work.
You could carry a paper journal with you, and when an idea hits you, you can jot it down immediately and then when you get home or back to school, enter it into your saved document.
Hope this helps a bit.

Perform a Google search for "template document". There are many free templates available to get you started.

All of these can be formatted in Microsoft Word, which is pretty standard on most computers. You just have to learn how to do the formatting. Good luck!
