see the lady above me has got us completely wrong.
u need to know a lot about the history from the day these countries were born.
It is true that the countries were divided because of religion, but these religious differences were created before giving independence by the british empire.coming to the main issue between these two nations, independence was not given to india as whole but to the all the kingdoms that existed before the british came to india ,pakistan and east pakistan(present bangladesh). However all those small kingdoms were merged into india with their consent except kashmir. In 1948 when pakistan attacked kashmir.the then ruler of kashmir Raja hari singh immeditely agreed to merge with india and wrote a letter agreeing to be a part of india and asked the prime minister of india Jawarharlal Nehru for help, but nehru delayed in sending army for 3 days.by that time the pakistani army has occupied half of kashmir.after three days the indian army was sent to kashmir and drove the pakistan army to SOME EXTENT.By that time united nations mediated between india and pakistan and the war came to an end,BUT the part occupied by pakistan was not returned to india and it is still with them.pakistan has waged three wars for kashmir but suffered defeat in hands of india. After the war in 1965, pakistan has created terrorist camps and started training young people into terrorists .NOW the present situation is completely different as these camps are under the control of religious fanatics and no longer listen to the pakistan government.
by the way there isnt enimity between the people of india and pakistan except for some religious fanatics.Recently when indian people visited pakistan during the cricket test series that was held between india and pakistan indians were treated very well by pakistani people and I read in many newspapers that they gave goods for free and were respected a lot.

Indians are mostly polytheistic Hindus that believe in many gods and have a strict caste system, and Pakistanis are nearly all Muslims who believe in one god and do not have a caste system.

Hindus treat those without a caste designation as untouchables. India has more Muslims than any country except Indonesia, and quite often there are struggles over particular shrines and locations where both religions have had sacred events. At one time much of India was conquered by Muslims, and they did not treat the Hindus very nice.

The Koran basically believes that polytheists who do not believe in one God need to be converted or killed. Christians and Jews are "people of the Book" (ie the Bible), and can be tolerated. Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and others are not acceptable.

Pakistanis consider themselves to be the champions of Muslims in India. India would rather that Pakistan kept its nose out of India's internal affairs.

There is a dispute over Kashmir, a beautiful land which is divided along a cease-fire line from long ago. The Pakistanis think that the people of Kashmir should have a plebiscite as to whether they should be a part of India or Pakistan. There are many Kashmiris who favor independence, and would like a vote on that issue. India does not favor any vote on Kashmir and would prefer that Pakistan withdraw from territory in Kashmir that it occupies.

When the British ruled India, they frequently played the Hindus and Muslims off against one another, \which increased the animosity between these two groups.

It started with the partition at the time of Independence. Prior to that things between hindus and muslims were fine. With partition the hindus coming from the region now Pakistan and the muslims going from India to Pakistan lost everything - their land, farms, ancesteral properties, gold ornaments, money, shops, businesses etc. The partition was not peaceful - there was rape, masacre, everything..... infact there were trains that brought in masacred refugees to either side.
My parents saw the partition, and described it as the most horrific period of their lives. My dad would often tell us about dead bloated bodies of muslims lying on the roads. My moms family came from Karachi after having lost everything.
My dad had real hair raising stories to tell. Once he was mistaken for a muslim and chased by a mob, he had to show them he wasn't circumcised to escape being killed. After that he had a crucifix tattoed on his arm to show he was a christian.
All this caused a lot of animosity amongst hindus and muslims. But it is not the common man who feels this way - it is more politically generated, the uneducated masses fall prey to the all the propoganda against India and Pakistan.

India - Pakistan.
Islam came into India almost immediately after Prophet Muhammed(peace be upon him). Since then there was no conflict in the name of religion. But with the advent of British, the Brahmins joined hands with the British, created the conflict between people in the name of religion for their personal gains. To put it more straight manner, they draw the boundary as India & Pakistan, Now they are selling Weapons of Mass Destruction to both the countries. Now who is gaining? India or Pakistan. No, the western world is gaining from this conflict.
Pakistan was created with a good motive, but now it has gone away from the right path. So all the problems.

This is more to do with politics of other developed countries.
They have a mantra of "divide and rule", why are we forgetting that?
If they do not do this who is going to buy their ammunition's?
How are they going to fund their defence budget?
The issue is fuelled by politicians in both the countries to manipulate the common man, who has nothing to do with such disputes.
If the government and politicians of both the countries realise this facts disputes would be resolved much faster.
It has also been observed that lots of funding is done by third countries to keep the fire on so that they do not get well along.
There is no reason for any Indian or Pakistani to fight over a small piece of land (called Kashmir) which they don't even know if it exists.

Religion. Pakistan was founded as a Muslim state when the British rule ended there because of the severe religious conflict between Hindus and Muslims, there were expulsions in both directions and war, and the hatred is still there.

I'm afraid it boils down to the centuries-old conflict between Hindus (India) and Muslims (Pakistan).

B'cos the Pakis are a bunch of scheming bastards who at the drop of a hat indulge in terrorism and warfare on Indian soil. Their motherfucker leaders dream of Kashmir and that sets their adrenalin pumping. Kashmir is just a "pipe-dream" for them. So every time they indulge into this Indians have to fight back.
