Both are Islamic faiths but the difference has to do with the Caliphate, the succession of leadership and the qualifications of that leadership.

My basic - VERY basic understanding is they have differering beliefs on who the prophets after Mohammed are and the hatred goes from there.
I'm sure there are thousands of years of sectarian strife to fuel the current situation.
Its a more extreme form of Catholic and Protestant -they are both Christian but they were burning and hanging each other for YEARS!!!! Look at North Ireland!!!!!
