If this is a front load washer or dryer, this has become a common problem and almost impossible to remove.

"For best high-end performance, go with a front-loader. If you’re willing to spend $1,000 or so, at this point we’d steer you to a front-loader. The best front-loaders offer very good washing, ample capacity, and quiet operation. The front-loading design has been around for a while, and Frigidaire, GE, and Kenmore front-loaders have a good track record for reliability. (Note that numerous readers have reported that their front-loading washers developed mold or a musty smell. Leaving the door ajar between uses and using chlorine bleach occasionally should help.)"

Every time I finish with my washing machine I wipe round the door seal to remove any water trapped in the seal and leave the door open for a time until it has cooled and dried inside. To get rid of the smell you will need to wipe round the door seal with bleach and then run a full hot water programme (no clothes) with white vinegar to rinse out the machine. At the same time remove the drawer where you put in the soap etc. and give that a good scrub with some bleach too.

typically the drain may be clogged find the drain plug and clean out the trap. then run a 90degree wash cycle to clean the machine (empty no detergents).
check the door seal to see if there are drain holes which have clogged up if there are then you are going to have to clean them it is not a pleasant job but an essential one. do this maintenace yourself or pay a service engineer a hunbdred pounds or more to do the work for you. suffer and then treat yourself to something nice afterwards it has to be better than paying an engineer. for such a simple fix.

however if the above fails to fix the problem then you may have to find the help line for your machine manufacturer and report the prblem to them and what action you have taken to fix the problem, they should be able to tell you if you need a service engineer or tell you what steps you can do to try to fix the problem.

depending on the smell it could be the drain is not correctly clearing, or your drain pipe (not the machine) is backing up (clogged) which requires either a plumber to fix or you can attempt to do the work yourself with a few simple tools.

so many different problems to list and solutions it is almost impossible to list them all. so i'm not going to try.

i've started with the most common causes try the fixes and see where you are and if the problem persists.

I have a rubber seal around my front-loading washer. I noticed that it was starting to smell like mildew, so I started leaving the door cracked open after I was done doing laundry to allow it to air-dry. If your washer is smelling particularly bad, I would suggest running an empty (small) wash cycle with a cup of white vinegar. This will eliminate any odor that has remained and then when the cycle is done, leave the door open to air-dry.

The reason for smelly washing machines is invaribly RANCID FAT. You know that greasy gunge left by detergents. Get a bag of Washing Soda (Asda 55pence), no soap, no clothes, throw the whole bag in, do your hottest wash...cleans your drains also.

Very easy - provided you find a home for it near a sink, or drainage. If you don't know what you are doing this is a job for an expert - I still chuckle when I think of the guy who plumbed his machine into the central heating pipes.
