You can disagree with God, heaven and hell all you want, but they are not going to go away.
Basically, we are not justified by our works, because if you are honest with yourself, even our few good works are tinged by selfish motives. Our evil deeds far outweigh our good, no matter what. We are only justified by HUMBLY accepting that we cannot get to Heaven (which has not gone away) on our own shaky virtues, but by what the Messiah has done for us. Jesus, in his sacrifice, restored the balance, answered the need for justice, and offered us mercy.
As for those who say there is definitely no Heaven or Hell because they arent visible in telescopes, microscopes or are otherwise proveable by empirical means, lets see if you can use the same stuff to prove they DONT exist. You cant. The fact you cant see something doesnt mean it is not there. You cant directly prove the existence of a black hole, a neutrino, or even Abraham Lincoln. These require indirect evidence and deductive thought. The existence of a conscious and rational God can be deduced from the orderly universe and the design which is so glaringly obvious all around us (this is how I came out of athiesm). The existence of Heaven and hell can be deduced by the fact that this rational God says they are there. Their existence is also supported by string theory. The fact there is suffering and disorder in our world is due not to God, or random evolution, but due to a fallen and now imperfect creation.
I have read the English translation of a lot of the Holy Books, and the Bible is the most rational and cohesive one of the lot. The only way it is not, is by taking things out of context, or simply being blinded by anti-bible prejuduces.
All this being said, what happens when we die is not controlled by what we believe, or what we want to happen, but by what our Judge sees when He looks at us. If He sees self-righteous pseudo-virtue, we are in a lot of trouble. If He sees Christ accepted by us, we are OK.
As far as heaven being a place where harp-whanging angels float insipidly around on clouds, I dont know where this nonsense comes from. The Bible says we cannot imagine or understand what is there. I'm guessing it is right.

I disagree with the Heaven idea. I think that when someone dies they go where the shoelace knot goes when you pull the string to untie it. Nowhere.
When you die, you leave this place... but you do not enter another place. It's more like POOF gone. No more. You don't have a perspective, nor any way to have new experiences.
You're not floating around in some dark place, thinking. Nope. Your mind does not exist after death, and you have nothing to think with. In fact, that statement is too generous because the words "you have" implies that YOU exists in some sense. But even so much is not true. You don't exist.
After you die, you [no action verb is appropriate here]. It's more like this: After you die, the universe returns to being without you, more or less as it had been before you were born. The only sign that you were even here will be the marks you left on papers and the footprints you made in the sidewalk concrete before it set.
And unless you're Someone Really Special, the marks on the papers will be judged worthless and nobody will know whose footprints are in the concrete.

Im sure Ive had a near death experience. Most of it has been erased from my memory tho I think there was another person with me. We got rejected at the Pearly gates for some reason and were sent back to this planet. Ive always questioned "why us?" but theres no answer. I think this other person is aware of what happened too tho I havent had any contact with them since. The Higher Power decided we should come back and I only wish I knew why. Whatever it was has left me with a strange feeling in my stomach every so often like Ive got another soul trying to escape from me, hard to describe but Ive always said its the feeling you get when youre about to fall off a chair or go down a huge roller coaster. Its really weird and I expect to keep getting this feeling until my time really does come up.

Some people believe that when we die we are given a job, or have certain tasks to do. What that job is, is unknown. Only the dead know what the dead do, and there is only one way to answer that question with certainty. Some believe we are rewarded for our good work in life and we are also shown the errors we have made and how they effected the people in our lives and our world. Perhaps the job we have to do, is to correct those mistakes. How we do this remains the mystery. Just a thought.

Since the question was, "What do "you" think happens when you die?" My answer is: "We Do Not Die!" We have Life Everlasting!
By saying this I mean that having faith in God's perfect plan, a plan that if we began to count to infinity, then times that by the square root of eternity, we wouldn't even begin to scratch the surface of the enormity of God's Plan...to me Death is Life in another form. and we cannot Die without God ever. Actually we Do not Die. We just change from our physical form. John 3:16
Just as I believe we cannot be born without God.
The reason for those two comments are Birth and Death are Two VERY POWERFUL MOMENTS OF CREATION and having free will I believe we are at the cause of our death no matter how we die. NO MATTER HOW!!! I can say that out of true experience. I worked with the dying for the last ten years and literally watched people "will" themselves to die.
BUT you canNOT die Against your will.
Heaven is here and now.
A state of mind if you will.
What happens when you leave here will be a series of processes. Three I believe...All to your choosing.
My Advise to you in the Holy Trinity of God at the time of your "Death":
1. "It would be wise to think only what you choose to "experience."
2. "Say only what you choose to make "real."
3. "Use your mind to consciously instruct your body to demonstrate everything about your self in your highest and grandest level of reality."

Nice to see someone 'courageously' asking for something beyond just the religions !
Well, the first thing that would happen is ..... we would not be left with the sense organs to 'know' that the game is over (meaning, we are 'dead' , in the sense that this body is no more available for us !).
Most 'beings' would remain 'stuck' in this very FIRST problem itself ! May be very difficult to accept logically, but a little more open-minded view would convince that this is not altogether preposterous to consider.
The most 'heavy' of the inclinations of the 'being' predominently carrying such inclinations in thoughts, it would then seek a form suited to 'fulfil' those inclinations. A whole system of spirituality is available with rich experience of several centuries in eastern countries. A person need not blindly believe these systems. There is a structured path laid for such seekers to experience it for themselves, because these spiritual preachers vehemently insist on experience for oneself rather than blind beliefs ! But one thing that cannot be avoided is the fact that the very path of spirituality (the question is referring about the 'spirit'... hence the word spirituality) is a bit mystic, and hence presents an immediate problem of 'not-so-easy' to accept logically !
Several saints have given adequate cohesive reference to indicate concurrence with this theory, in most religious paths even including Christianity(though may not be popular , for obvious reasons of lack of appeal to sense-organ-limited preachers).

yeah I am a Muslim and I belive that too. But its like we've got to wait in a place called 'Barzaqh'. Its between the two worlds. Then on the Day of Judgement good people will go to Heaven and the wrong doers to Hell.

I am associated with Jehovah's Witnesses, and I truly believe that when I die, I will simply be dead. The memory of me will then go back to God, and will stay with Him until He resurrects me and gives me a new body. Have you lost anyone in death in your life? Do you remember their laugh, or their temper, or their way of wearing their hair? How about the way they smelled? Or their favorite food or color? Well, in the exact same way that you remember those things, Jehovah God created us, and remembers EVERYTHING about us. Those memories will go back to Him, and wait there until a resurrection. If we go directly to heaven ( most folks idea of afterlife for the good) or hell (most folks idea of afterlife for the wicked) when we die, what is the point of the resurrection that Jehovah promises us? Good question today! :)

first of all, death is simply the a separator of life and a person's fate (heaven or hell).
and of course, who do good go to heaven and who do bad go to hell.
after death comes judgement day, which is said to last what is equal to 50000 years, people one by one are brought by God and judged by every single thing they did in their lives. If your good deeds were more than your bad deeds, you go to heaven, and the opposite if the bad deeds were more.
(and i'm serious about the 50000 years part).

In the broad sense, Christians believe there is salvation for all those who ask for it before death.....
This however depends on which denomination you belong to, there are two divisions here one group believes in salvation on earth..(like born again Christians) and more conservative denominations (catholics) believe in salvation after.
Basically to all Christians there is life after death....either in the nice place or...hell..........
According to different churches there are also different ways of getting to Heaven or Hell.
