You have already taken the first step by recognizing you need to change. That is the hardest part for most people...they do not know or can not see that their actions are hurting others and that is the key. Set a standard of placing other people's needs before your own. Taking a genuine interest in others in helping them become a better person will develop your character as well. Focus on bringing out the best in others and the best will come out in you. Also, take a look at your friends...that may need to change and it will once you change your priorities. Developing character is a life long process...each of us is a work in progress.
No one is perfect and we should all be pursuing to better our character daily. Hope you find favor in your pursuit

First of all you have to realize that you are worthy of LOVE. And it all begins with your SELF. You cannot give away what you do not have, so Love...Love...Love your self... for it is only then you can find it in your SELF to GIVE it away so freely to others!!! Second, forget about all the crap you were taught...it's all bull crap...someone else's thought's and idea's...That's junk. Dude, don't you feel good when you think and create stuff up all by your SELF. Well that is what life is all about. Don't do repeat's and do-over's....It ain't no fun...you'll just be trying to RE-live someone else's ate up miserable PAST life. NAH- Next, Re-train your way of thinking: Dude you have been nagged on your whole life and have a way of thinking so now you have to catch your SELF when you get back into your bad habits of negative thinking. If you find your self thinking a negative thought-consciously change it. Consciously think the Highest thought about everyone and everything all the time. The great Masters of the world knew this little secret and ALWAYS stuck to it. Here is a good saying and say it to your self..."I will be the greatest version of the grandest vision I ever had about my self and show that through my examples, daily!" Always, ALL WAYS!! ONLY THINK THE HIGHEST THOUGHT!!!! YOU can NEVER GO WRONG WITH THAT. AND YOUR FIRST THOUGHT IS YOUR SOUL telling you DUDE, it's OK. take care yo, I know you'll turn out to be a great man one day!

Make a pro / con list. List the things you like about yourself in pro and the things that are negative under con.

One at a time stop doing the bad things. Work on them all but concentrate on one at a time.

Put a rubber band on your wrist, when you do something you want to change. SNAP IT HARD to remind your self.

I never swore when I was young, but then again society didn't swear continuously until the last 5-10 years. Needless to say I picked up words that I never knew as a child. So this past year I have "almost" stopped a really unattractive habit. You make a commitment to yourself and amazingly enough your mind and mouth will actually listen.

Good luck on dropping or changing your bad habits, and Happy New Year.

This is so easy...do one nice thing per day without expecting anything in return.....hold a door for someone...say something nice to someone for no reason (a cashier at a store, someone waiting in line), if you see someone on the street struggling with a bag, an elderly person trying to cross the street, etc., offer to help....be polite.....say "thank you" and mean it....give a small compliment to anyone at all......actively appreciate and be grateful for the things around you.....this is so, so easy....just one small thing per day...

Make it your goal to love others. Love, love, love. Love your family, love your friends, love strangers, love yourself. Everything thing else will follow.
