Floppy Disk?
Anyway XP will be obsolete by February 2007 so hardly worth upgrading to something that is about to be replaced.
Don't waste money on XP.
Save your pennies for a new machine with Vista on it.

Hi, eventually it will be a matter of economics for you. If you are running Windows 95, 98 or 2000, these operating systems are more vulnerable to viruses etc. If your pc falls prey to one of these viruses, that attack MS Office products, you are running the chance of losing those files. Windows XP has much better security, and if I'm not mistaken, there is no longer any support or upgrades for your older OS. Secondly, if your comptuter is "old" 4-5 years old, I would question the future reliability of your hard drive. If I were you I would start transferring that important data to a either a CD or DVD if its available. If your HDD crashes, chances are you will not be able to recover them again.
So, not only do you have an issue making a decision of upgrading your OS, you also need to consider how well your pc is protected, and how much longer your Hard Drive is going to last. I'll jump on the band wagon with the rest of your friends, and say... "You should upgrade to Windows XP." >>> "If your pc meets the minimum hardware requirements for the upgrade"

In fact, if you look in internet for drives, you can find a driver for a flash drive!!! I am assuming you are running Win 95 or 98...
Hey, I double-boot my machine: Windows XP and Windows 98, because my Canon 5100 printer is not XP compatible, and I will not buy another until this printer brakes for good. And my flash drives work on both systems.
The problem is, when something breaks in your computer, let's say, your hard drive, then looking for a replacement is really hard if your computer is rather old. It is like looking for a radiator for a 1912 Ford T. In computer matter, a machine running Win 95, 1 Gb Hard disk, 64K ram and Pentium III 300MHz, is like having a 1912 T Ford LOL!!!
I strongly suggest you to find a flash drive who has drives for your system, install the drives and make a backup of your data in CD using one of your friend's computer. If your computer is working fine, then don't buy another one. But, if you have to upgrade, it is better to buy a new computer and keep your oldie "as is" and use it as a "backup computer".
Save money to buy a more up-to-date computer this year, and leave your oldie as is. There are good deals everywhere that includes a monitor, a mouse and a keyboard for a fair price, and WinXP is included in the deal.
Give it a try. You will not regret it.

If your current hardware supports it and above all if you have an urgent need to upgrade to XP, fo it by all means.
You don't have to wipe your HDD clean to install XP. You can upgrade your existing version of Windows to XP. To do this, Just start your PC as you do normally. Once Windows is loaded, you're ready to go. Just pop the XP Cd into your CD drive. It should autorun (if id does not, open Windows explorer and then the CD-drive and double click on the file "setup") and winXP setup will start.
Just follow the on-screen instructions and when a dialog box asking you what to do appears, choose to upgrade your existing version of Windows. This way your files/programs will be safe.

A very honest answer.
If it's not BROKE, don't FIX IT!
First off a up-grade would be a good step, but do you really need all that extra fancy stuff? Will your computer handel the up-grade? Keep this in mind as well, if you do not have the Quick Restore disc's and you ever deside to go back you can not go back. Also a up-grade is not like the total windows operating system. It is nothing but a up-grade and it will also slow your computer down very much.
Your best bet is if you want a XP System is to joing eBay, http://www.ebay.com and look for something that fits your pocket book.
You may also want to read all about how 2's here: http://search.reviews.ebay.com/_Software_W0QQucatZ18793QQuqtZg
Keeping everything in mind as far as cost goes, a up-grade can cost as much as up to $100.00 plus for the software alone. If per say you should deside to maybe up grade look here first: http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?from=R40&satitle=windows+xp+desktop+computers as you can buy a real XP Computer for just a few dollars more.
So, bottom line is To up Grade or not to up grade. NO, your computer will be no better and will run much slower.
Look the links over and good luck.

There is a new version coming out shortly for Windows, supposed to be better then XP, called Windows Vista.
The whole set up is $199 and the upgrade is $99. It's not out yet, but you can save up for it and be faster and give everyone that keeps telling you to upgrade to XP the finger. Check the 1st link.
With your files, you can use a temporary, 1 month subscription to a online file storage wesbite. See the 2nd link for some websites.
Good luck.

Flash drives will work on older Windows versions, like 95 and 98, if you go and download drivers.
It sounds like your running an older computer; it would probably not be in your best interest to upgrade to XP.
If your current system is working fine for you, then don't let people pressure you into upgrading. I still run an MS-DOS system for a lot of my apps!

Flash drives will run on XP unless they are made by elves at the North Pole. You can load XP over your old OS and still keep your files too. You might want to back them up first if you can.

Um, flash drives work on Win98 and higher - the difference is you don't have too install the drivers on XP.
These days it is becoming both a matter of economics and convenience TO update - just how long do you think you are going to be able to keep software for your older builds, let alone collaborate with anyone else.

I hear ya about the money situation... XP is going for $90.
As far as your important files go.
One option is create a free web site account such as tripod or geocities. They allow you 20 megs of web space. You can upload your important files there then download them when your pc is set up with XP. Note: you can create more then one free web hosting account.
For larger files try a place like http://rapidshare.de/
The file will delete after a week of no downloads or you can manually delete them before the week is up.
Best of luck
