It really depends on what you are looking for in a game. If you are looking to "prove your skill" then by all means keep it PvP. This is perfect for the person who treats this as a game-always trying to win and get better stuff.
PvE is more for the player who consider this as less of a game and emphasize the social aspect.
Note that PvE does have enough PvP to suit everyone's blood lust while you can always be social in PvP, so you can really have your cake and eat it, too.
So try one that you feel is your style. Then, if it doesn't feel right as you are playing, switch to a different server. Eventually, you'll find your style. Have fun!

A bit of both. PvE is a great chance to explore, find out interesting things about the game, and experience a pretty wide assortment of content. Getting together 40 people and working your way to drop Ragnaros the first time is a really great feeling. Plus, it's a good way to learn your class skills.
PvP is also a blast (assuming it's a fair fight). You get a wider range of reactions that can challenge you to pull some interesting moves. There's also some really nice gear available too.
That said, I prefer the server to be RP/PvE, simply because if I'm out trying to do PvE work, I don't want to get ganked - especially by some 60 if I'm out on a lowbie.

I quit the game awhile ago, but from what I remember it was fun gathering gear in PvE and then using it in PvP.. but I got really sick of constantly raiding, which is a big reason I quit the game.. and it's tough to compete in PvP if you don't have high end raiding gear.. you can get decent gear as PvP rewards, but it requires a LOT of playing to earn those..

Okay since my better half answered this question (Alysza) I will too :)
I would have to agree with her on this, it really depends on the mood and what you want to do with your character. I started up a Hunter recently already in the mindset to PvP at 19, so I started looking for 19 gear early to 'twink' him. Twinking seems to be almost required for the 10-19 WSGs these days, but it does make PvPing more fun ;)
I have other chars too so when I'm in the mood to play the game, those are my game time chars. Hunter will get leveled eventually but right now it's more fun PvPing with him.
And for those who have only PvPd in a pug, last night I helped gather up a raid team for WSG, and it was AWESOME. We whooped hordies and it was great lol. If you wanna have a blast PvPing, spend the time to gather up a group from your server, makes it easier also to set up a battleplan before you go in.
For the Alliance! Long live Leeroy Jenkins! lol

I play on a PvE server, and for the longest time I loved raiding....Ive been through all the dungeons including Naxx and I have awesome gear however I got burned out of raiding and love to PVP so with my new spec for my warlock, I spend most of my time in the battlegrounds.

PvP FTW!
What else would be the point to get the best gear in the game? To fight some PvE mobs? I think not :P

With me, it depends on the mood honestly. Sometimes you just wanna go off by yourself and quest or something. But then theres those days where you just wanna go 'attempt' to beat the piss outta someone whose actually gonna try put up a fight :P
