There are a few software packages (most cost money) that will help you with this, but your best bet is to learn how to do it yourself.
Back up all your important stuff before messing with anything (even if you get a program). If you are using Windows XP, then set a restore point.
First, go into the windows menu startup folder and delete everything in it.
CTRL+ALT+DELETE will let you pull up your task manager, and you can see what apps and processes are running. You can just start killing processes until it stops working, and then reboot, or you can make a list, and go online to find out what each one is. Some will require you to remove junk programs, Some you can just disable within a program (where you want to keep the program, you just don't need it running all the time), but some will require you to modify your registry. (Back it up before you start, or you will regret it).
There are programs to help you with your registry, as well as allowing you to disable stuff on startup that doesn't show up in the startup menu. It's best to go ahead and learn a bit about it though, and do it manually. As long as you keep a backup, then any damage you do is easily undone. Take notes, and test to make sure everything is working whenever you make modifications.

Actually you don't need software for this problem. Go to your start button on the bottom left of the task bar on the bottom of your desktop, click it, click run, type in msconfig . Click OK. Click on the start up tab (farthest to the right), on the bottom right there should be a button that says DISABLE ALL. Click that button. Restart your computer when prompted. Do not worry about stopping important programs. Your computer will start up with all necessary programs only (since you have disabled everything else manually). Your machine should be much faster now. Hope this helps.

The software running in hte background are services needed by the operating system and some applications to function. Regardless of any software you need to know what you are turning off. If you computer is slow, try adding additional RAM.
Also look at www.annoyances.org for Windows tips.
In addition you can use MSCONFIG.

Depends on if you want to stop the programs or to decrease their priority. Big difference basically; The programme called TUT ( The Ultimate troubleshooter) available at Chris Pirillo's Web site/s can decrease the priority of programs that you need less and you can ramp up the priority of programs that you want to ultilise the most.
There are also many other priority managers, but they cost a bundle.

Windows Defender is a good little program that lets you see what's running and what gets started at start-up. You can then change what you don't want to run anymore. I quite like it, though it is part of the Windows Empire!

I've always done it manually. Go into your control panel, use "Add/Remove Programs" to get rid of all the programs you don't need.
