Federal employees are just happy to take the day off with pay. Will anyone "mourn" Ford's death?

It is a show of respect, not of mourning. It's just more convenient to say that we are mourning the President's death, than showing respect for his passing. Also - by taking a Federal Holiday, we get to keep the stock markets closed for another day, making it a four-day run where the impact of Saddam's execution won't have as great a perceived effect on the economy.
I don't know if that was intentional or not, but I'll take it.

I mourn the death of any public figure passing out of respect and empathy with their family - no matter what their politics. I think it is important that we take time to reflect on the accomplishments and mistakes of past presidents to get a better understanding of our current government. In that sense - I would have to say that these public funerals and recognitions are important and worth the time.

Yes, some will mourn, but it is more to honor the former president that the government as a whole is taking the day off.
