Absinthe, a drink so "bad", it's banned in the US

2007-01-02 01:32:31 · answer #1 · answered by Anonymous · 6 0

it's absinthe.

It is a type of alcohol made in Czech Republic. It's also called the "Green Fairy" because of it's high alcohol content (50% - 70% or even more), distinctive green color and anise taste.

There is a whole ritual of drinking absinthe - you don't drink it like vodka! There are a lot of ways of consuming it, but the most popular one is to melt sugar into it through a spoon with holes and add some water to it :)

(I'm from Poland, yes, it's illegal here too, but since nobody is checking us on the border .. :>)

Absinthe...
legal only in two European countries...yes one can buy a bottle of "absinthe" in most countries but that is not the real stuff...its absinthe for babies. The real stuff has alcohol, herbs and Thujone, which is often claimed to be the active chemical in absinthe, is a GABA antagonist and while it can produce muscle spasms in large doses it does not cause hallucinations.

"Absinthe makes you crazy and criminal, provokes epilepsy and tuberculosis, and has killed thousands of French people. It makes a ferocious beast of man, a martyr of woman, and a degenerate of the infant, it disorganizes and ruins the family and menaces the future of the country." -Edgar Degas'

Absinthe (also absinth) (IPA English: [ˈæbsɪnθ] IPA French: [ap.sɛ̃t]) is a distilled, highly alcoholic, anise-flavored spirit derived from herbs including the flowers and leaves of the medicinal plant Artemisia absinthium, also called grand wormwood. Although it is sometimes incorrectly called a liqueur, absinthe is not bottled with added sugar and is therefore classified as a liquor or spirit.

absinthe--it is called the green fairy because it's highly hallucinagenic. Many people do believe they've seen fairies etc. Watch the movie, "From Hell" and you can see Johnny Depp drinking it in the "accepted" manner.

it was supposed to be absinthe. Edgar Allen Poe used to drink it. It is some pretty strong stuff, and no one sells it. It has to be made.
