"Omission is the night soil of fantasy." It's human nature to fill in what we don't know. Since we can't disprove the existence of ghosts, then maybe they do exist. Certainly there are people who believe in ghosts who are not mentally ill. There are other characteristics of a mental illness than just seeing something that no one else does. Of course, persistently seeing something no one else does should be a prompt to seek help. When we fill in what we don't know with want we want or fear that's a projection not an observation of reality. It's fairly common to have a ghostly experience when grieving. We want relationship. If that relationship is the only significant intimacy we have then that's a problem. In this context the ghost is symbolic of needs and emotions. I would say it is very important to the quality of one's life to come to an understanding of the symbol.

Your mind is your worst enemy or best friend. You interpret all your feelings or beliefs on your past experiences. Look at life logically and you will be OK> There is nothing,in your mind, to harm you if you just take over your own thoughts and think how insignificant you and I are in the whole scheme of things. Unless you are a Caesar or a Hitler, you affect very few people.
