Forget the money for a moment. The last thing Detroit needs is the ongoing soap opera of Barry Bonds and the steroid issue. The Tigers can spend $16M in a much wiser way. They are still the defending American League Champions and adding Bonds to the picture would have been a major distraction. He would only hurt the team he's with. The Giants are a nowhere team going nowhere. On the other hand the Tigers will be a major factor in the American League pennant hunt.

Trust me here man....if you are a Tiger fan YOU DON'T WANT BARRY BONDS. The Tigers are really one of the few teams that are still respectable when it comes to the steroid fight. The Cards had McGwire, The Cubs had Sosa, The Giants had Bonds, The Rangers had Palmiero, Oakland Had McGwire and Canseco. Detroit did good this off-season by signing Gary Sheffield instead. The price wasn't near as high and they still have their pitching. Verlander, Bonderman, and "The Gambler". I hope that Detroit can once again find their way to the World Series and I don't see any reason they can't with the team they will put on the field.

It's pretty simple Barry Bonds is a cancer to a clubhouse . He had all the talent in the world he is just a lightning rod for trouble. Steroids , Taxes, or whatever .With all of the controversy around him it would of been stupid for a young team like Detroit to give him 16 million dollars and let him destroy the team chemistry. The Tigers took a chance on Kenny Rodgers last year that paid off, it worked out so far . You just can't go out and sign every big named player out there or you'll turn in to the Yankees . Selective spending that's what got them to the World Series last year and that will get them back this year.
Besides they already took a chance on killing the clubhouse by trading for Sheffield, he and Bonds already have a beef with each other over Bonds " stealing " Sheffield's chef. Hopefully we will all watch Detroit in a World Series parade this year anyway ,,,Go Tigers 2007

Barry Bonds wouldn't be the right mix for Detroit. I've followed this team most of my life and they have never had a player with this much drama. Also in my own opinion, the Tigers may have contemplated Barry's retirement. Would Bonds retire in a Tigers uniform? I doubt it. I just didn't see the Tigers abandoning a very young, talented team and bringing in this controversially egotistical player for 1 maybe 2 years with the hopes he will stay healthy. I for one am glad Bonds is not a Tiger!

I agree with the first poster. Barry Bonds is not worth $16,000,000. Player who had 99 hits and 26 homers, while posting a .270 average don't make that much money. Pujols is worth that much, we know he can still put up good numbers, I say one more 2006 for Howard and he's worth that much (right now I'd say about 7 mil), Soriano is barely worth that much. The Tigers are smart, the only reason the Giants picked up Barry is because he's a fan favorite and he sells tickets, it's a business move, the Tigers want to win, the Giants want to profit.

Comerica Park is not outfitted for an entrance large enough to get Barry Bonds' head in the stadium.

Why would they want a 42 year old player would can barely field his position for $16 million? One who has a pending Balco case, constant injury problems, takes days of because of migraines, and isn't the of leaders in the club house.
There's only one team in baseball that will put up with that, and that's the San Francisco Giants. There never was any other option.

Nobody wanted to deal with the Bonds Media Circus. The Giants are used to it by now. They can handle it for one more year. WE love our Barry. You'd love him too if he was on your team.

They already had added one clubhouse cancer in Gary Sheffield, they didn't need another.Beside that aspect - where would you put him in the lineup? He is going to be a part-time player at best, and not worth the money or aggravation. It isn't like there was a bidding war over him,you know.
