If it detects imminent failure in the hard drive, how long will I be able to use it before it dies? I am going to get a new one, but not for a month or two.

Computers normally do not detect an imminent failure, it just happens.

This is where being proactive comes in, so back up your files.

for imminent failure, it should have died when it said it.

I was going to do that and a friend said "Let me see it", he just "NUKED" everything, re-installed the programs, and now it's like new again.
