Collect articles about kidnappings and show them to your parents telling them they could have been prevented in many cases if the kid had a cellphone.

Why do you think you need it?
I'd just tell them the real reason. If it is something like "I just turned 11 and I would feel like the coolest guy/gal in my class if I were to have one" it may be that your parents are right when they say you don't need it.
If you think you really need it, use arguments why it would be good for your parents to buy you one. For example, you can tell them that they will be able to contact you if you are late, so they won't have to worry about you then. If they think the bill would be a problem, ask them for a prepaid phone instead of a contract with a monthly bill, and tell them you would learn to take responsibility with your money if they allot you a fixed sum for the prepaid cards, e.g. $15 a month.
Of course, you must consider that they would expect you to keep these promisses. You might not like it that you won't be able to chat endlessly with your dad paying for it, or that they will phone you and tell you to get home at once if you are late, but you will have to put up with it till you eearn your own money and get your phone yourself.

do you really NEED one, or just WANT one? as a parent, i feel better with my teenagers, especially the girls, going anywhere if they have a cell phone with them. however, you must assure your parents that you will be responsible with it if they help you get one. it is much cheaper if they can add you to their plan, and many companies offer free phones, but if you over-do it, you could run their bill up sky-high. it would be a good idea for you to offer to pay your own part of the bill. also, school is NOT the place for cell phones...many schools will confiscate them.

Before you start trying to convince your folks to buy you a phone, you need to know why they don't want you to have a phone right now. Maybe their budget is tight, maybe they're scared you'd meet strangers with it, etc. maybe they feel you don't really need it right now. Once you know the reason, you can figure out the approach in convincing them.

Good luck!

How about.....this is just crazy thinking now.....get a job and pay for it yourself........that would be the best way to let your parents know you need one.
