Yes and no. Let me explain. Yes it is to be expected if maybe you just started taking the pill, or if you have not or do not take regularly/on-time and another major reason for "break through" bleeding (this is what you are experiencing) is that your birth control is not strong enough. The way the pill works is it "tricks" your body into thinking you are already pregnant, therefore you don't release an egg...this is inhibiting or preventing ovulation. The pill also works by making the environment unfavorable (more acidic) for the sperm to travel/live....this is the pill's back up, so even if you do release an egg the sperm won't be able to fertilize it. Now, there are some other questions/factors that you need to ask/discuss with your health care provider:
-the reason you are on and/or intially started taking the pill
-length of time on the pill
-type of pill, monophasic (one hormone level) or triphasic ( three hormone levels)
-last pap smear, was it normal or abnormal, are you overdue for a checkup
-your period can be affected by stress, diet, exercise, weight loss/gain, other medications, alcohol use, bulemia, anorexia.....really I could go on and on...
Call your doctor/health care provider, seriously. It may be nothing big, just a small adjustment, but you won't know unless you are evaluated by your doctor/health care provider. Even if you don't have active insurance you should be able to get advice from your ob/gyn office, if not call an agency like Planned Parenthood or if in school, contact/see the school nurse.

Birth control pills contain estrogen/progesterone and when those levels increase or decrease it can cause continued bleeding as you describe. Have you been taking this prescription for awhile or a couple of months? BCP can cause breakthru bleeding in the middle of the month or short one day periods. In essense, they can disrupt cycles. You should call your gynecologists office to seek more information.

If you have just started taking it, it's normal. Depends on what type of birth control it is and how your body is. It's refered to as "breakthrough bleeding" Its horrible, I know. You almost feel like saying "whats the point of being on birthcontrol if you bleed and can't have sex!". Anyway, its always a side effect. Even if you are on it for years its possible. Have you missed any pills perhaps? what kind are you taking? when i was on the shot form i bled for 6 months...

If you have jsut started taking BC it might be just your body adjusting. If that's not the case or if it continues, you really should consult a doctor.
