Is it affecting the internet surfing speed of others?

all activity is logged by username so the admin can see what was done under your username (whether or not it was you using that username)

and yes all your downloading is taking up some of the connection capacity and will be affecting others

update after reading previous answer:
the logging will be automatic so it is more likely to continue over the break rather than be disabled during the break and others will definitely be affected - by how much will depend on how many others and what they are doing

Yes!!!! for both questions.

there are many ways for administrator to trace ur network activities using firewalls, specially designed softwares. In fact he can deny internet access using those softwares.

It definitely affects other internet users on your network.
Best would be avoid downloading stuff in peak hours, you can download in night times.

It depends on your school. Talk to someone in the IT department casually about it, it really varies on the internet usage policy. We had some form of tracking, but only when the bandwidth was really getting eaten up. We used it for only investagational matters.

You asked two questions. First, the IT department can certainly track such things. Whether they will do it during winter break is another matter.

Second, what you are doing does not affect anyone else.
