US forces were hardly "green" that fought on D-Day. Some of the units that came ashore later on were indeed green.
The US 1st Infantry Division was one of the most veteran units in the US Army, with heavy fighting in both the North African & Italian areas. As was the 9th Infantry Division. The 82nd Airborne Division was also a veteran unit.

The Big Red One saw action in North Africa and Sicily, the Fighting 29th was green as well as the 101st, the 82nd seen action in Sicily, it was the baptism of fire for the 4th ID, the 1st Ranger Battalion fought in N. Africa and Italy, the 2nd Rangers were green.
The baptism of fire had to come sometime, it may as well have been the Normandy Invasion...what the problem is?

Statergy in that operation, kept the seasoned troops back, for the hard long fight to come. Ike spoke to them before, and told them what percent, would not make it through. We did what we had to do for the best use of men and equipment. We have seasoned troops in this war, that are picked off little by little, because we will not identify the real enemy, and stop their supply line.

I wouldn't say the Big Red One were green! Some of the units were because there simply was no choice. It wouldn't have done to try to disengage units in Italy and send them in without rest and refitting, for instance.

Because there weren't enough vets. This was mainly because of the US's limited action in the European theater before Overlord. However there where some vets who fought in Italy and North Africa.
