Both the Dem's' and re pubs' can rarely agree on anything even when they want the same thing. Unless you go to c-span you will not see much coverage of third party candidates. Large corporations make huge contributions to candidates they support, you are limited in how much you can donate to a candidate personally. Corporations set up committees and groups to support and fund candidates. The latest bankruptcy laws were written by the banking industry for congress to make into law and it bit them in the butt. The other problem is that some people vote for 1 party all the time, either because they support that party all the time and believe it is the only party to do whats right,or they are dissatisfied with the other party for some reason. Both parties want it their way and will compromise some to get their way. If what I read on the Internet last night is even half true, this election may not matter anyway. If we have another attack like 9/11 or a major disaster before the elections F.E.M.A . will take control and George Bush will become the true power of government. If it happens after the elections and before the new president takes office,I don't know what will happen. G.W. signed an executive order for the continuity of government and F.E.M.A. will take over and suspend the constitution and the President will be the unity executive. Congress and the Supreme Court will still exist but will have very little voice, the President has the final say in all matters. There was also another site talking about the formation of the North American Union (Canada,U.S. and Mexico forming a union like the E.U. and the U.S. Constitution will be gone.

Absolutely. Several historians have established that there were communications between the U.S. and Soviets regarding Berlin, and it was agreed that the Soviets would get Berlin. If you can find some good invasion maps showing American troop progression in the weeks leading up to the invasion of Berlin, it is very clear that the American troops turned upward and avoided the city. Otherwise they would have arrived first.
I do not intend this to take away from the Soviet victory! Their losses were considerable in the war, and they fought courageously. Had they not been involved, it would have been much more difficult, if not impossible, for the Allies to have won. The fact remains, however, that the U.S. let them take Berlin first.

It's really questionable whether the US could have gotten to Berlin first. While the Red Army did pause for a while on the Oder, if the US forces had made a drive for Berlin the Soviets would have certainly launched their operation much sooner.
As far as Roosevelt "giving" Eastern Europe to the Soviets, no one gave it to them, they took it from the Germans and it would have been impossible to kick them out without starting another war, and the casualties involved in doing that would have been much greater even than the proposed invasion of Japan.

That probably played a role, but there were other considerations. There were an awful lot of Russians headed for Berlin (the Germans had always kept 3/4 of their forces on the eastern front) and they had a tremendous momentum. It would have taken an aggressive move for the US troops to get to Berlin, and the risk of US and Soviet troops shooting each other up would have been high.

I think there was a number of different reasons, firstly in terms of geography the russians were closer at that time, but the main reason was that the americans wanted to avoid a huge loss of life, the russians themselves lost between 100 000-200 000 men, there was no mass surrender the germans fought to the end, this is also a reason why the americans dropped the nuclear bombs on japan, they didn't want to be fighting there way through the japanese mainland because of the stubborn resistance they would encounter. The russians leadership (Stalin) did not have a problem with this, there were just as brutal to there own soldiers as to their enimies. Maybe this a reason why they were victorious.

political reasons? Russian forces invaded Berlin first, were well established by the time us army got there.
"The Battle of Berlin was one of the final battles of the European Theatre of World War II. Two massive Soviet army groups attacked Berlin from the east and south. The battle lasted from late April 1945 until early May."
"The Western Allies had tentative plans to drop paratroopers to take Berlin but decided against it. Eisenhower saw no need to suffer casualties in attacking a city that would be in the Soviet sphere of influence after the war. The plan was unrealistic in terms of the number of soldiers and the amount of supplies needed for the operation."

No, unless you consider idiocy, imbecility, ignorance, stupidity political reasons.
The idiot roosevelt thought that he could get an agreement with Stalin and he agreed to let the Russians enter Berlin first. Also roosvelt gave Stalin half Europe ( the Eastern side ) on a silver plate.
This bunch of incredible mistakes took many years, and a lot of suffering to fix. Really, roosvelt did it

It wasn't a question of "letting" the Soviets come into Berlin,it's that they had the least resisitance on the Eastern Front. The German army was surrendering in droves.
