Arthur Conan Doyle made his stories suspenseful due to Holmes' analytical eye, which literally dissects each and every potentially suspicious person or situation. Doyle made ordinary events somehow take on a sinister meaning... in the 'Speckled Band', a whistle heard at night becomes a harbinger of doom. Holmes ability to obtain factoids from the mundane, his ability to visualize far ahead and somehow connect all the threads, all adds to the intriguing nature of his adventures.
