The fashion industry affects body image by using stick thin models. The average size woman is alot larger than the models that the designers use to model their creations. And in my opinion I think a woman looks better with a little meat on her bones and some curves. But some women, and especially young girls, think if they aren't as thin as these models that they are fat, which is far from the truth.

Fashion has a large impact on young women, and their body image. The models are held up as the ideal for beauty, and "normal" women don't look like that. No matter what the fad is for the hottest look, it's how other women judge themselves by. In many cases, other celebrities follow the same trends as set by the fashion industry, so there aren't often other role models young girls can use for being beautiful because all the famous women look like they are set in the same mold.

For the past decade or so, the skinnier a woman was, the more attractive she was. This has had a very negative impact on young women who were (and are) trying extreme forms of weight loss to get that toothpick body. Things from unhealthy diets, too much exercise, diet pills, eating disorders, and even illegal drugs have been used by the models and their followers alike to achieve and maintain as thin a body as possible. As a result, many females of all ages have gotten sick, been hospitalized, and there are even some cases of death due to the side effects of being malnourished and underweight. From a 6 year old girl, to a 60+ year old woman, all females have felt the pressure to be underweight, and the fashion industry has been identified as the leading cause.

However, with the recent changing of standards since September when Spain took the first step, maybe healthy models will become the permanent criteria. The new rules setting a minimum BMI and age, banning underweight and underage models, will hopefully show the world's women that they don't have to be a toothpick to be attractive. The emphasis is now on health, not being skinny. If this catches on with the rest of the major countries who lead the fashion world, then hopefully women all over the world will see that they don't need to make themselves sick to look good.

Spain, Italy, Brazil, India, Israel, to name a few, have all taken positive steps towards promoting health over looks. Now if only US, UK, and France would follow suit, three of the 5 big fashion hot spots.

The fashion industry was the original culprit, but the media and all the pseudo-celebs have taken up the cause. The result? A generation (or two) of young girls who think that how they look is the ONLY important thing in their lives. As long as they are thin enough, and pretty enough, and dressed well enough...they don't have to be smart or have ambitions for themselves. They will land a rich husband and have all the things their little hearts desire. Soon enough, they will see their dreams crash...but what we are left with is an overwhelming number of girls with horrible attitudes. The young men, on the other side of the coin, feel that it is their right to have the pick of the litter...choosing dangerously thin young women as their mates...rather than focussing on the important qualities one should look for in another. Its a self perpetuating cycle...and could well be the downfall of the generation. And make no mistake...we will all suffer. Where will our next leaders come from?

Badly! As is the media. As a teenager I was highly insecure and thought I was completely over weight as I did not look like those on the television or in magazines. I ended up with Body dismorphic disorder (BDD) whereby I would not look in the mirror as I was so disgusted with myself. It is only since I talked about how I felt and started to notice that real girls/women look more like me that those on the television that I realised how demorialising the media/fashion industry are. The fashion industry is getting worse, especially as models are literally dying to be skinny to get the jobs. Ive read about two models who have died just to keep their skelatal shape. Its wrong and its giving the wrong image and advice to young girls and women.
