i don't know where you are shopping to pay £100 for a 4GB memory stick pro. i found this that should suit your 4GB needs:

http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=40WR&SearchType=1&SearchTerms=memory+stick+pro&PageMode=3&SearchKey=All&SearchMode=All&NavigationKey=0

the link above relates to the product listed under sources.
i hope thaty helps. that would be about £80-£85 including shipping a saving of £15 + on the £100 you quoted.

I don't know. I guess it would help to know how they are made to begin with. 32MB isn't much storage, who would buy a 32MB, 64MB or even a 128MB Memory Stick. I wouldn't. I also don't use Sony cameras, the only item I own that uses Memory Sticks is a PSP and even then, I haven't bothered to get a larger capacity one because all I use my PSP for is playing games.

It might be easy to cram 4GB of memory in such a small device and it might not but as I said, I know nothing of the fabrication process. It probably doesn't cost THAT much to make and I guarantee you they are making a profit on it.

Sony is the only one who charges a premium on their storage, the ONLY ONE. And you're right, even online those Memory Stick Pros retail for around £90.

On the other hand, a 4GB SD card costs about £40, as I said, Sony charges a premium for their memory because it is the only one you can use with Sony devices and that's the reason they do it, you don't have a choice, probably as simple as that.

Dabs has some good deals on memory, http://www.dabs.com/ on everything except Sony memory. Still, you'll pay more than £90 in a store, I'm pretty sure of that, unless you can find one on rebates that is.

Suppose they are getting back the development costs of squeezing in another load of memory.

The 32mb one is older technology and its development costs have been recouped - the bigger one hasnt yet so higher cost to get money back the company has paid out to develop it.

Just a bit more, there are some PC processor manufacturers that make 1 chip to cover a range of speeds but then on the final thing turn whichever speed they want on or off - and yet charge more for the faster version than the slower one!!

its called supply and demand

regardless of the manufacturing costs, the product that everyone wants will always cost the most, wheras the one that nobody wants will costs the least.

thats its it in its simplest form.
