I burn at least one copy of last year's calendar and chant:

Burn, burn you day-book burn
Last year's worries never return.

I think I read about that in one of Scott Cunningham's books, but I don't recall which one.

I try and stay happy and always contact my family. I have heard said that how things are for you on the changing of the year.Is how they will be for the coming year.
I try and pay all my bills and as much of my credit card as I can the week before Christmas. In preparation for the New Years as I am not taking a chance on bad luck with money in the New Year. It is too hard to get!
.I have been told how you are, happy, sad, lonely, angry, broke etc at the stroke of 12midnight,is a sign of how it will be for you in the coming year.
My neighbor is from the Isle of Mann in the English Channel. A very old belief still practiced there is that,it is very bad luck if a red haired person visits or crosses the threshold of the house on New Years Eve.
I don't call myself really superstitious but I am not prepared to risk fate either!
Happy 2007

For as long as I can remember, (and tomorrow I'll be 35), my dad has made me eat lima beans on new years day, he says it is for a prosperous new year. On new year's eve, I have my own rituals I perform, but I wouldn't consider them superstitious, just a religious thing.

Just before midnight, I go outside. I look at the stars. At first, it's very quiet. Then off in the distance, I can hear the low rumble of fireworks and churchbells which tell me the new year has begun.

Then I walk back inside bringing the new year in with me.

I don't practice them anymore because they never seemed to help anyway, but some that are practiced in my family:
Cook black-eye peas for good luck
Cook greens for money/prosperity
Cook hog head for whatever reason...???
Money in your pocket so that you wouldn't be broke during the year (that one was really funny)
No wet clothes hanging in your house
No dirty clothes in your laundry
A woman couldn't be the first visitor across your threshold (bad luck, especially if it's your lover's wife!)

Whew!
