I have a laptop ( 256mb ram, 1.8 GHz, DVD drive ( not rewritable) ) and a friend gave me a DVD+RW with some files on it. I want to put the files on my desktop. The files are 350mb each. Every time i go to transfer the files, i see the progress bar and 20min it hasnt moved on that much and just seems to fail.
But i can play the files from the disc itself, but the stall after about 10min ( there avi files ).

I really want to transfer them onto the desktop, any help?

try copying the files one at a time...its possible that either your hard drive is getting too full for the files to be copied, or the drive has stopped spinning to save on power. If you select each file one at a time and select "copy to" then they should all go, or at least to the point that the hard drive has capacity.

256Mb of RAM is really really small by current standards

Windows XP will only work properly with 512Mb of RAM installed

Esp if you have a resource hog such as Norton Internet Security installed.

Yes Yes Yes I know Microsoft says it will work with 64Mb of RAM but can my old Volkswagen wing it on the highway? - actually no - love it as I do.

You could try pressing Ctrl Alt Del and shut down all the applications that you don't need

But I guess you don't know what applications you need or not

Consider getting a modern up to spec computer. I.E. 1Gb RAM 160 +/- HDD

First of all, make sure you have enought disk space to do so, secondly, do not put large files on your desktop - put them into a subdirectory of your My Documents and if you want put a shortcut on your desktop. Putting files on your desktop causes your profile to be very big and your computer to run slow.
