don't worry about windows vista for now. Its going to be awhile before it becomes available at an affordable price for the rest of us. It is always a good idea to get the largest amount of RAM possible and most new laptops offer a free upgrade to windows vista (usually with all custom build systems and a few select manufactured ones) when it becomes available. If you're buying a newer laptop then it probably takes a maximum of 1 to 2 GB using 2 sticks. Just make sure you have an available slot to stick that second stick you will buy in the future to bring it up to its maximum capacity.
You can use the tools at crucial memory to find out exactly how much ram your model laptop you are shopping for has a maximum capacity for at:

You can also make your purchased for memory through them...highly recommended!

If you plan to upgrade to Microsoft Windows Vista (which comes out very soon), I would definitely recommend going with a minimum of 1GB, rather than 512MB. Even if you don't plan to upgrade, 1GB would make your computer run much more smoothly.

Vista takes 512mb just to start up, even a laptop with 4gb of RAM in it, such as mine, would struggle to run Vista, an AV and a high-speed internet connection.
Vista takes at least 1gb to run comfortably, my advice, buy a computer with 1gb of RAM in it if you can afford it, and stick with XP.

get the one with only 512, but then upgrade it yourself to a gig. in most cases you will save a ton of money this way.
