It isn't filmed at all now. It used to be filmed in front of a live studion audience, though.

All sitcoms (with very few exceptions) in the US are filmed in front of a live studio audience. It gives the cast & crew a sense of what works and what doesn't. Many times, jokes or situations will be rewritten on the spot, if they feel that the audience isn't reacting quite the way they expected.

As for the laughter heard in the show, however, that is usually added in, or at least pumped up and doctored up a little. Also, during the tapings, there is generally someone in the audience leading them to laugh at certain parts, and be quiet at others, kind of like a musical conductor.

All part of the magic of TV!

Yes, it was.

I saw a behind the scenes documentary some 2 or 3 years back. There was an audience watching an episode played out live.

Often the cast would interact with the audience. At one point, during a break, David Schwimmer was talking about changing Phoebe's punchline and then he asked the audience if they got the joke.

They all roared 'YES!'.

Yes it was, although sometimes I believe the laughter was edited (and canned) to fit the right situation and to remove other sounds. Atleast thats what I think I remember from when I visited the set.
