Revs have no bearing on it.

What matters is whether the engine is an "interference" or "non-interference". What this means is, when the piston is in the top position would it make contact with the valves. A lot of japanese and korean cars do this. Generally american brands(ford, GM) do not. But I don't this car specifically as its not made in american. I would say the first thing to do is call up your local dealership and talk to a mechanic they should know or be able to tell you.

If it is an interference engine then its a lot of money because you will need to replace all the valves and do a head job on it which when my wifes honda with a gas engine did this it cost us over $1500 US. Diesels are more expensive.

If its a non interference motor then your in luck because all you will have to do is add a new timing belt and set the timing and away you go.

was a ford main dealer mechanic for 9 yrs and seen lots of snapped cambelts on the 1.8 diesel and i'm sorry to say all of them had varying degrees of engine damage. If your lucky it has only bent the exhaust valves, but i have seen a few engines where the camshats have been snapped into three pieces and damaged the piston crowns badly enough to warrant an engine change. Sorry mate

Most, if not all of the valves will be damaged - also some cylinder face scarring.

It's a head off job so needs a lot of work. Expect in the region of £500 to £700 at a 'normal' garage - two or three times that if a main dealer. It may be cheaper to have another engine installed.

Hi there,
When these things happen, it's a bummer and at this time of year it's worse, the car is the last thing you think about in the festive period.
The engine has been identified as an interference engine, which means that piston and valve contact will happen in the event of timing belt breakage.
It is unlikely that NO damage will have occured, my own history of this has been rare that No damage happens.
Good Luck

hi when the belt snaps on this engine it usually snaps the camshaft and the clamps that hold the camshaft down, but dosent bend the valves. this meas the head dosent have to come off. the clamps arnt available from ford. (they come as part of the head ), so you need a scrap yard for your parts. once you have them its a nice easy job for any mechanic. £120 labour max + belt kit, good look Tim.

If you got it stopped quickly enough and the car was doing low revs, you may be lucky. However I'd think worse case scenareo as most cases it will have bent valves.
