I have a quite powerful laptop, I guess its heaviness is down to either the extra cooling system, or the extra battery. The latter sounds more convincing to me. I actually use my laptop as if it was a desktop, is it a good idea to solely running it without the battery? Consequently making my carrier bag lighter... and I guess the answer is...yes?

Thanks a lot for your replies so far. They all make perfect sense. If I do just leave it out like Donald suggested, is there any good way for me to protect the socket connector on the laptop away from dust and damp etc. etc.? or does it not matter at all?

No, it does not do damage - just pull it out. You are doing it the best possible way if You do not use battery all the time.

Batteries have many but a limited number of loading cycles.

And if You use accu/battery. If You use battery make sure that it is emptied completely regularly since some battery types suffer from memory effect. They will "remember" to point to which You discharge normally and stop using any energy beyond that point.
Result when leave it in place while You use from cable-plug You are more likely to damage.

As long as you don't pull the battery out while your computer is running, then you are doing fine. It is important that you use your battery by leaving the computer on until you get the low battery warning about once every two weeks minimum and then give you battery a full charge. It will make it last longer.

I never use the battery on my laptop either.

Dont ever remove the battery if your pc is running off the battery. That much should be obvious.

The only other 'harm' is the wearing of the contacts if you remove and replace a lot.

It will not damage the laptop if you use a lot of force removing the battery. To be honest, leaving the battery in your laptop for long periods of time while connect to AC adapter will damage your battery's life.
