Bit of a basic question but as it's a rover probably damn near everything would have to be repaired by now

Hi there,
These cars have a service time table of 15k or 12months, so at a 6th yr service the timing belt will require changing, You then have air filter and spark plugs to think about, engine oil/oil filter and probably pollen filter too. Low mileage cars can then add further expense because brakes corrode rather than wear and exhausts fail from the inside/corrode as water collects internally, rear tiebar busehes split and brake pipes corrode. The list is endless

The big and costly one is known as HGF - Head Gasket Failure. Look for a creamy deposit under the oil filler cap, murky, oily cooling water and water leaks around the head/ block joint.
If these symptoms are there start saving about £500.

I would have thought that a rover of that age and high mileage would be totally beyond worthwhile repair.
