Please let me know to which country you are referring. Also, can anyone confirm or disprove the idea that you can only take the CPA in the U.S.? Thanks in advance!

In the U.S. I would rather have the CPA certificate. It is much broader and can lead to a very rewarding career. The CMA is usually limited to management consulting and I think that an experienced CPA who gets a CMA is much more knowledgeable in the field.
CPA's is a U.S. designation but all countries have a similar designation. For example in the U.K. they are called chartered accountants.
