My hard drive had started to make strange sounds and I figured it was about to go but what happened was a total surprise. As expected , it crashed. When I tried to reboot,Ireceived an error message"can't load DOS.This was followed by "Invalid VDISK,and then invalid signiture. I assumed a punk hacker had sabotaged my hard drive and because I expected it to go , it was no big loss.Oddly enough,I tried installing XP Pro on seven different disks from seven different manufacturers with no success. These were my used hard drives, but usuable..I thought.Either DOS could not or would not load or installation would faulter from VDISK or signitures or some obscure driver.Suddenly my CD/DVD rom and Floppy drive failed to recognize certain disks and under no circunstance was I allowed to WIPE, reformat or partition any of my disks.I'm now using a back up system with, coincidentally, one of the same disks that were unsuccessful before.Motherboards with a virus ?George Bush ? By the way...the system is a little older but still works...or worked great. An IWILL motherboard with a VIA chipset and an AMD 1200 mhz processor and ample memory...if that helps.

Ah, your bios are probably corrupt. You were right about two things... your motherboard, and possibly George Bush.

NOTE: Whenever everything is malfunctioning, open up your computer and start removing stuff one by one. In doing this, you could be eliminating the culprit, and at the same time solving your problem.

I'm not totally sure if it is the mobo or not, because usually the mobo wouldn't even function (if it was fried). I'm thinking your bios or your harddrive totally crapped all over everything else, and THAT stinks.

I've actually had this happen to one of my computers before, and it can be a pain in the you-know-where. I would recommend taking the computer to a professional and having them look at it. I did the similar process that you did, reinstalling the XP Pro and it completely trashed the hard drive, because I started to get symbols (it looked like wingdings). When I took the computer to the shop, they said that I would have to replace everything because it was just so virused and unusable. I would definitely get it in, because if not, it's going to be a heck of a lot more expensive to fix. Good luck!!

I can't exactly tell what your problem is but I can only make several speculations.

1) Your BIOS has been severely screwed with
2) Your motherboard is fried beyond recognition
3) Your ATA and/or power cables are broken
4) Your PSU has gone haywire (Which could've led to no.3)

You need professional help. With that depth of damage done to your PC, only a technician could fix that. Or you can opt for a new PC.

Ok, first I´m not sure if I understood your problem - my answer might be bullshit then, but if it is a matter of "no recognition of drives or HDs", then, it might be your BIOS battery, it might be out of charge. Replace it with a new one, and then reboot your system. I hope it helps. Best regards, Gabriel.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
