What would happen to a guy if his dog ate a child that people have been looking for, and he doesn't tell anyone for a few days? Also, should the man shoot his dog, or keep it alive for possible investigations?

He'd definitely be charged with something. It IS his dog and he's responsible for the canine's actions. He is also wrong for withholding information. The dog should be kept alive and turned over to the appropriate authorities.

I pray this is just a hypothetical question.

I doubt any dog would devour any child whole. There would be remains left. If there were the case, you'd be committing a crime by concealing the evidence. The family is insane with worry and grief and some guy is sitting on the only thing that will allow them any peace.

Any dog capable of "eating" a person must be turned over to authorities, who WILL euthanize it, and examine the carcass for any bones or other proof of the dog's diet of people.

If the person in this situation does NOT act to do the right thing and turn over the remains and the dog, he will eventually be scrutinized for the Murder himself. You might go to jail for your actions so far, but far better than a life sentence for a murder committed by the dog.

He would be charged with obstruction of justice and/or interfering with a police investigation.
The dog would be euthanized, and stomach contents examined for evidence that it ate the child.

I wouldn't know what to do, but I'll give it a shot.

1. Inform your local superiors.
2. Defend yourself from lawsuit.

Well, what do the detectives want to do. If they want it to die then it will die. If they want it for further investigations then they will take it and keep it.
