1. For your Anti-Virus.........................

I like the AOL AntiVirusShield. Don't let the name AOL scare you. AntiVirusShield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.

In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, AntiVirusShield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.

AntiVirusShield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources.

Updates many times per day to detect new malware.

Free to anyone, AOL member or not from:

2. For your Firewall......................

An excellent free firewall is Comodo Personal Firewall. It can pass firewall "leak tests" that even most of the "paid-for" firewalls cannot pass.

And Comodo has a great support forum. Where the CEO / President of the company might even himself answer your question! Check it out at:
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

3. For your Anti-Adware and Anti-Spyware needs...............

Pick and choose at least 2 anti-spywares from the list below and alternate scanning with them on a regular basis. New spywares are created literally hourly, so no single anti-spyware can really detect all malware. Have at least 2 on hand and alternate scanning with each every few days or so. All are free. All can remove as well as detect.

Spybot Search and Destroy:

Unfortunately, many "paid for" anti-spyware products are in fact either of limited usefulness or downright scams. When in doubt, look at the list of rogue anti-spyware solutions listed here:

4. And to protect your computer from ever getting infected with spyware in the first place...................

SpywareBlaster:

SiteAdvisor:

Everything here is 100% free!!!!!!

Great luck!

You require at least two anti-spyware (for all malware). I recommend using Spyware Terminator and AdAware SE. Both are free, and Spyware Terminator has one of the strongest real-protections I have ever seen. AdAware is the pioneer, of course. And you need to use a firewall, too. Get either ZoneAlarm's basic firewall, or Comodo's fully-featured firewall. Both are free and give you equally good protection. Keep all of these updated, and scan your computer for spyware every 5-6 days and for viruses every 10-15 days.
AdAware SE: http://www.download.com/ad-aware-se-pers...
Spyware Terminator: http://www.spywareterminator.com/
ZoneAlarm: http://www.majorgeeks.com/ZoneAlarm_Free_d388.html
Comodo Personal Firewall: http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download/CPF_Setup_2.0.0.1.exe

P.S. If you have genuine Windows, you could add Windows Defender to your anti-spyware list as well. But better not use its real-protection as it will horribly slow your computer down(bcuz both Avast and Spyware Terminator are quite resource hogs). Also, Avast had problems with ZoneAlarm until a few days back, I dunno if they are compatible now.

MSE is pretty good. Make sure your firewall is turned on and don't run with admin privileges. Create a regular user account for your day to day activities. Create an admin account for installing software and hardware. This way if you do get some malicious software, it can't do as much damage.

On windowsOS, connected to the internet? nothing, yeah I can give you a program that lights up, flashes keeps logs, but thats about all it does. Yes a Firewall is good. No matter what OS you are on, but there is no Security in a Country that Allows the Goverment to tap there home phones, read there personal mail or get a list of what books they have read from a public library.
Security is as safe as you allow it to be.
And we, as Americans have failed at that job miserably.
