I am answering this after the Ford funeral, so I hope this question wasn't about that.

Anyway, public schools are state-run. There are federal laws that govern public schools, but they are run by the states individually.

If this is about the Gerald Ford funeral, I don't think public schools are considered to be "federal". From what I know, they have to go by state regulations. Also, I'm in the school busing business, and the students are returning today.

If you're asking in regard to today's holiday, public schools are not necessarily closed when federal businesses are. Frequently public schools are open on days when the post office is not. Call your school for specific information.
