It's COLD in Space! It's just that there are properties in the Suns rays that bring out properties in the atmosphere,
like oxygen, that mix and create the warmth.

our atmosphjere traps and insulates, plus the core of the earth is hot, which does not heat the surface but DOES stop incoming heat be leeched away by trying to heat the whole planet. Oceans and land mass traps and stores heat and released it at a slower rate. The ocean at night time is slightly warmer than it was during the day. Hence sunlight is not the only motivating factor. that said, it is a large source of heat. Want to see the way sunlight works without our atmosphere? Check out the moon. couple hundred degrees in sunlight, negative that in the shade.
