You will have to pay it back I am afraid.

You will have to pay it back, sadly. Be careful though - by receiving this extra cash you probably got pushed up a bracket in your tax and national insurance payments, so double check this and demand that any losses you have incurred be made good. If you don't, chances are the payroll people will extract the gross sum from you, so all the extra tax/NI you paid will be your problem not theirs!
Hope this helps, Steve.
PS yes, I sometimes work on payroll systems!

Is this anything to do with Agenda for Change? If so, then contact your union immediately! If you are not in a union, then you need to contact HR, or someone on the Agenda for Change team. If it was back pay, or arrears because of re-grading, then it may well be an error, but it seems highly unlikely that you will have to pay it ALL back. If you are not in a union, then I suggest you join immediately. They are not legally obliged to provide you with help for 13 weeks, but they almost certainly will do so over this.

You will have to pay the amount back, but if you have spent it try negotiating with them to pay it back at a set amount each month.
Be wary of any extra money in your wage packet that you are not expecting.

You will have to pay it back but should be allowed to pay it back in instalments that you can afford. They cannot make you pay it back in 1 go as the mistake was theirs and you queried it.
See your union official.

Not a lot you can do about it, if they made the mistake, they will just deduct it from your next wage packet.
