How can a person be considered both arrogant and patronising? Is this some kind of joke? I don't understand. I have often wondered about this phrase, where did it come from? How can one person be both arrogant, and at the same time patronising? Does it actually have a good meaning?

You are correct. I abhor sloppy misuse of language: rigorous vocabulary indicates - and perhaps assists in - rigorous thinking which is no bad thing.

Well, you're doing really well trying to understand these two words. Really, you are. But you need to be as bloody fantastic as I am to understand that both arrogance and patronisation often go hand in hand.

See how it works?

Both of the words work hand in hand. When you are patronising the immediate characteristic you will be connoted with is arrogant. Its rather bad to be called one.

Arrogant means exaggerating or disposed to exaggerate one's own worth or importance often by an overbearing manner.

Patronizing means to behave in an offensively condescending manner toward someone.

So these words are related - it shows someone who thinks too much of himself and too little of others. This is a proud person who doesn't respect other people's self worth, only his own.

I don't think these words are positive attributes.

Patronizing is a form of arrogance. Being patronizing by definition is condescension.

displaying or indicative of an offensively condescending manner: a patronizing greeting, accompanied by a gentle pat on the pack

if i'm not mistaken this attribute was assigned to you by some female friends.
in my opinion ... yes you could be both at the same time... and the good thing is that if you can see the funny part in this scheme you can attract more women. Women love Funny Arrogance. and if you don't believe me, just go and ask around.

"Patronizing" does not necessary have a good meaning especially in our era of celebrating personal freedoms and identities. To be patronizing and protective over the kids who can not take care about themselves or over the person who is in a bad situation at certain moment in certain circumstances is OK. But, I guess, is a person is tending to set him/herself above the other person, to tell to him/her what to do and to blackmail someone if he/she does not fulfills his/her expectations, than patronizing is closer to arrogance and controll than to protectiveness and care.
